How to use remove image background

  1. 1

    Add an image

Drop a photo with a plain, uniform background — a headshot, product shot, or scan works best.

  2. 2

    Check the key color

ImgSprint detects the background color from the corners, or you can sample any pixel with the eyedropper.

  3. 3

    Tune tolerance and softness

Raise tolerance to remove more similar colors; soften the edge for a cleaner halo.

  4. 4

    Download with transparency

Save a transparent PNG or WebP, or flatten the cut-out onto white as a JPG.

What you can do

Automatic plus manual key color

The corner background is detected for you, and you can always sample an exact pixel off the image.

Tolerance and softness

Fine-tune how aggressively matching colors are removed and how gently the remaining edge feathers out.

Transparent output

Export PNG or WebP with a real transparent background, previewed over a checkerboard so you can see it.

Nothing uploaded

Color detection and cutting all happen locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of backgrounds does this remove?

This tool is color-based, not AI segmentation. It works well when the background is plain and near-uniform: a white, black, or solid-color wall, a paper scan, or a studio backdrop. Complex or textured scenes with many colors will not cut out cleanly.

How does the color detection work?

On load, ImgSprint samples the four corners of the image and averages them to guess the key color. You can override it with the eyedropper, which reads the exact background pixel you click, and then fine-tune with the tolerance slider.

What do tolerance and softness do?

Tolerance sets how close a pixel must be to the key color before it is removed — higher removes more similar colors but can eat into the subject. Softness feathers the transition at the cut edge over a range of color distances, producing a smoother outline instead of a harsh line.

Why is the preview a checkerboard?

The checkerboard is a standard way to show transparency. Squares are visible wherever pixels have been removed, so you can judge exactly what is transparent before you download.

Can I export other formats than PNG?

PNG and WebP keep real transparency. JPG cannot store transparency, so when you choose JPG the removed area is flattened onto white — useful when you need the smallest possible file for a white-background layout.

Will the cut-out have a fringe or halo?

On uniform backgrounds, raising softness usually removes the colored fringe around the subject. Because the method keys on color, subjects whose edges fade into the background may still keep a slight outline.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read and processed entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is sent over the network.
